Overthrow was published in New York by the Youth International Party Information Service (Yippies). The publication was originally known as The Yipster Times when it started in 1972, before changing its name to Overthrow in 1979.
The Yippies were a countercultural and radical group founded in 1967. They were known for using theatrical actions and pranks to make political statements. Overthrow featured a wide range of articles on topics relevant to the counterculture, including how-to guides for subversive or delinquent activities. In this edition, articles include the call to boycott South African gold, squatters in Amsterdam, inside the Philippine Resistance, and media censorship and democracy in Central America.
The Commonweal Collection includes 6 copies of Overthrow published between 1980-1986. Other materials in the Collection about Counter-culture (On) can be found on the catalogue here.
A full list of over 1,700 magazines, newsletters, bulletins and journals that are in the Collection can be foundĀ here.
