Justpeace (1985)

just peace 2

Justpeace is the journal for Pax Christi, the International Catholic Movement for Peace. The newsletter reflects Pax Christi’s focus on working for peace based on the principles of justice, reconciliation, and nonviolence. Pax Christi works for social justice, human rights, and disarmament on a global scale and is open to all who share its values.

This edition of Justpeace starts with a shocking statistic in an article on militarism and poverty by Bruce Kent. “For every 100,000 people in the world there are 556 soldiers and only 85 doctors. For every $20,000 spent on military training, $380 is spent on children’s education.” Kent goes on to write about charities’ concerns that if they focus on the link between militarism and poverty it could affect their charitable status, and also the willingness of people to donate. “Sometimes the partnership with Caesar can be a little too demanding.”

The Commonweal Collection includes 300 copies of Justpeace published since 1974. Justpeace is now available online. Other materials in the Collection about Christian Pacifism (Dy) can be found on the catalogue here.
